Love & Mercy

I find the topic of love to be problematic because it has taken on so many meanings. People just love to use the word! Anyway, I think the discussion has evolved into looking for things that are given freely, and love seems to be a favorite candidate. In its ideal sense, love requires an equal give-and-take between parties, freely given, and no “money” exchanged.
You cannot say, for example, that “I love Colin Firth!” because, chances are, he does not know you from Adam (or Eve). Well, you can say it, but it’s not really love. One way love is unrequited love, which is really benevolence.
Mercy seems to be the simpler concept. The one thing to note here is that, whereas (true) love implies equality between two people, mercy requires a state on inequality. The person showing mercy has power over the other person. It does not mean superiority. It is more a matter of authority.
So Laura’s challenge is still open. Can anyone think of other things with no price tag attached?
