Very true, about the Juvenilia. I often find myself laughing loudly as I read them. You would never think of JA being this witty and sardonic if you've read just the major novels. I must confess that of the early works, I have yet to read Catharine and Beautifull Cassandra.
Probably the best way to get insight on Jane Austen's person is through her letters. Deirdre Le Faye has a very good book of her collected letters. It will help immensely to read some of her biographies, though, to get an understanding of her state of mind when she wrote those letters. What I would give to see the ones that her sister, Cassandra, destroyed. Those must have been quite revealing!
